You can do various kinds of searches through the dictionary on the Advanced Search page. Some parts of this pane are intended for more experienced users, but you use this pane whenever you want to be able to search across entries for a word or pattern.
To look up a Warlpiri word or a pattern in a Warlpiri word, enter the search string, then choose Warlpiri Headwords for where to look in, and then press Find!
To search via English glosses, enter an English word as the search string, then choose English for what to look in, and then press Find!.
There are also various other places you can look for information, including searching whole dictionary entries with Anywhere.
Checking with Picture/Sound/Note will restrict the searches to words with pictures, sounds, or notes. You can even then leave the search string field empty, in order to find all words with pictures, say, or notes.
The search method allows one of Fuzzy Spelling (this is useful when you don't know how to spell a word - the system tries to allow for common English and Warlpiri spelling errors), Plain (the system looks for what you typed), and Regular expression. Regular expressions are a system for defining text patterns, which we do not explain here. Kirrkirr supports Perl version 5.004 regular expression syntax. The Whole word option restricts matches to whole words. This can be useful if you search for ear and don't want it to match words like spear. Be warned, though, that this might not work exactly how you want, because certain characters like parentheses that appear within headwords in the Warlpiri dictionary count as ends of words according to this option.
You can choose to search over either the Whole Dictionary (all words in the dictionary), the left hand side Word List (which may be only a subset of the whole dictionary if you have done a Filter Word List) or the current Search Results on the right hand side of the Advanced Search window (this allows you to do a second search over the results of the first search).
Your results will appear in the Search Results on the right hand side of the Advanced Search pane. The Search Results to Word List area lets you move these results to the left hand side Word List. By default, if you click on a word in the Search Results, it will also be selected in the Word List. You can turn this behaviour off by unchecking Auto Select. Moving words between Search Results and the Word List can either affect all words in the Search Results or only Selected Results (highlighted in yellow). You should choose the option that you would like with the radio buttons. With Highlight, Filter, or Add, you can then choose to move words from the Search Results to the Word List. The Highlight option just highlights words in the Word List. The Filter option leaves just matching entries visible in the Word List. The Add option adds the current or selected Search Results to the Word List.
By clicking on the column headers of the Search Results, you can sort by either column.
